Directory Website Builder: launch a directory that ranks and earns

Describe your niche. Totalum builds the listings, search, owner accounts and paid featured spots, on your domain.

Quick answer · Updated November 2026

A directory website builder creates a searchable site of listings, such as venues, suppliers or professionals, that owners can submit and visitors can filter. Totalum builds it with server-rendered pages that search engines can read, owner accounts, moderation and Stripe payments for featured listings. Start free; your own domain comes with paid plans from $29 a month.

Screens (6)

  1. 1

Home with search: search by city and keyword, plus featured listings at the top.

  2. 2

Results with filters: filter by city, price range and amenities, in a list view (no map).

  3. 3

Listing page: photos, price, amenities, contact details and similar spaces nearby.

  4. 4

Submit form: owners add a new space or claim an existing one.

  5. 5

Owner dashboard: edit the listing, see its status, and upgrade to featured.

  6. 6

Admin moderation: a queue of new listings, edits and claims, with approve and reject.

Built-in integrations used

  • Stripe payments: the $29/month featured plan as a subscription, paid into your Stripe account.

  • File storage: listing photos uploaded by owners.

  • Email: approval and rejection notices, renewal reminders for featured plans.

  • Web scraping: prefill a new listing from the space's own website URL.

  • Server-rendered pages: every listing, city and category page is complete HTML on the first response.

Build it in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Paste the prompt.

Use the example, or describe your niche, what each listing needs, how visitors search and what owners pay for.

  2. 2

    Refine with follow-up prompts.

    For example:

    • "Create a page for every city and every city plus category, like /coworking/berlin/private-offices, with its own title and description."
    • "When an owner pastes their website URL in the submit form, fill in the name, description and photos from that page, and let them edit before submitting."
    • "When a featured subscription is cancelled or fails, move the listing back to normal at the end of the paid period."
  3. 3

    Publish on your domain.

Publish to a Totalum address to test, then connect your own domain on a paid plan so listing pages build search authority under your name.

Pages that search engines can read.

A directory earns most of its visitors from search, one listing or city page at a time. Totalum builds server-rendered Next.js pages, so each listing arrives as complete HTML with its own title, description and URL, ready for crawlers and AI answer engines. Every record in the database can become its own indexable page.

Owners do the data entry.

A directory is only as good as its listings. Owners can submit a new place, claim an existing one and keep it up to date from their own dashboard, while you approve each change from a moderation queue. Web scraping can prefill a listing from the owner's website, so submitting takes less typing.

Revenue from featured listings.

Paid placement is the classic directory business model. Owners pay by card through Stripe into your account, as a monthly subscription. Renewals, cancellations and failed payments update the listing automatically, so featured spots switch on and off without manual work.

Filters built around your niche.

Coworking needs amenities and desk types; a wedding venue directory needs capacity and style; a supplier directory needs certifications and minimum order. The fields and filters come from your description, so the search fits what your visitors actually look for.

Frequently asked questions

Can listings rank on Google?

They can, because each listing is a server-rendered page with its own URL, title and description, and you can publish it on your own domain on a paid plan. Ranking still depends on your content, your niche and your links; the builder makes the pages readable by search engines and AI answers.

Can I charge for featured listings?

Yes. Owners can pay a monthly subscription by card through Stripe, into your own Stripe account. The app gets renewals, cancellations and failed payments automatically, so featured status turns on and off with the payment.

Can owners claim existing listings?

Yes. You can add a "Claim this listing" button that sends a request to your moderation queue, with a check such as an email on the listing's own domain. Once you approve it, the owner can edit the listing from their dashboard.

How many listings can I have?

There is no listing cap. Database records are unlimited and billed on demand in credits from your plan, and file storage for photos is metered the same way. Your plan sets the number of projects, not the number of listings.

Can I import listings I already have?

Yes. Upload a CSV or spreadsheet export and ask for an import that maps each column to a field, or have the app prefill listings from each place's website using the built-in web scraping. Review imported listings before you publish them.

Can visitors leave reviews?

Yes, if you ask for it. A reviews table linked to listings, with sign-in for reviewers and moderation before a review goes live, is a common follow-up prompt for directories.

Does it include a map?

The example prompt asks for a map-free list view. A map is not one of Totalum's built-in integrations, so adding one means connecting a map provider with your own key, stored as a project secret.
