Replit vs Claude Code compares two very different ways to build software with AI. Replit is a cloud platform where an AI Agent plans, builds, tests and publishes a running app in your browser, with databases and hosting included. Claude Code is Anthropic's AI coding agent: it works on a codebase you own, from the terminal, an IDE, a desktop app or the web, and leaves hosting and infrastructure to you. Many builders now use both. This guide compares Replit vs Claude Code on who each is for, what you get, pricing, and how to combine them, with prices read from replit.com and claude.com on November 1, 2026.

Want a hosted app with its own database that Claude Code can also build? Totalum builds real Next.js apps with sign-in, a SQL database, Stripe payments and hosting, and Claude Code can create and change them through Totalum's MCP server, on every plan. Start building free.
Quick Answer
- Pick Replit if you want an AI agent to build and run the whole app for you, with database, storage and publishing included. Core is $20 a month ($18 billed annually) and includes Free Mode for everyday Agent work.
- Pick Claude Code if you, or someone on your team, work in code and want an agent that edits a real repository you control. It is included in Claude Pro ($20 a month, or $17 billed annually), Max ($100) and Ultra ($200).
- The key difference: Replit gives you a running app; Claude Code gives you changes to your code. With Claude Code you still choose where the app runs, how the database works and how users sign in.
- Many people pair them: build and host in Replit, then work on the same code with Claude Code through GitHub.
- The middle path: an app builder such as Totalum gives you the hosted app plus a standard Next.js codebase you can download, and Claude Code can drive it through MCP.

When to choose Replit
Replit is the better choice when you want a working product without managing a codebase:
- The Agent plans, builds, tests and publishes the app for you, in the browser.
- Databases, file storage and hosting come set up, with no other accounts.
- Free Mode on Core and Pro makes everyday Agent tasks free within limits that reset every 5 hours.
- It keeps adding production tools: in October 2026 Replit launched a Monitoring Agent that detects production issues and publishes fixes (October 22), Bring Your Own Cloud for enterprises (October 16) and Cloud Agents for company codebases (October 27).
The trade-off is cost outside Free Mode: Power and Max Mode are billed by effort, and publishing, production databases and storage are metered. See our Replit review for the details.
When to choose Claude Code
Claude Code is the better choice when you own a codebase and want an agent to work on it:
- It understands the whole codebase and works across many files and tools: features, bug fixes, tests, lint fixes, merge conflicts, dependency updates and release notes.
- It runs where you work: a terminal CLI, VS Code and JetBrains extensions, a desktop app that can run sessions side by side and schedule recurring tasks, and a web version for long-running tasks on repositories you do not have locally.
- One subscription covers Claude for everything else too.
The trade-off is that Claude Code does not host anything or provide a backend. You choose where the app runs, set up the database and handle sign-in yourself. For other coding agents, see Cursor vs Claude Code.

What a first month costs. On Replit, Core at $20 covers steady building on Free Mode, plus metered publishing once the app is live. On Claude Code, Pro at $20 covers regular work within its limits, plus your own hosting and database bill. Heavy daily users of either usually move up a tier.
Want both the hosted app and a standard codebase? Start free on Totalum: it builds a Next.js project with its own SQL database, sign-in and Stripe payments, hosted for you, every paid plan lets you download the source and connect GitHub, and Claude Code can keep building it through MCP.
How to use Replit and Claude Code together
Pairing them is common:
- Start in Replit to get a working app with a database and a live URL quickly.
- Connect the project to GitHub and clone the repository.
- Run Claude Code on that repository for refactors, tests and larger multi-file changes.
- Push back to the branch Replit uses, then republish from Replit.
Keep one branch as the source of truth so the two tools do not overwrite each other. The deployment, production database and secrets stay in Replit unless you move them.
Replit vs Claude Code vs the alternatives

Why Totalum is worth testing alongside both
Replit gives you a hosted app; Claude Code gives you control of the code. Totalum is built to give you both:
- A hosted, production app. Server-rendered Next.js, BetterAuth sign-in, its own SQL database with an admin panel, file storage and Stripe payments into your own account, hosted on Cloudflare with no account needed.
- The code, any time. Download the full source and connect GitHub on every paid plan, from Starter ($29 a month), on every project. Viewing the code is free on every plan.
- Claude Code, plugged in. API and MCP on every plan, including Free, so Claude Code, Cursor or ChatGPT can create and maintain full apps through Totalum. See our Totalum MCP server guide.

FAQ
Is Replit better than Claude Code?
They do different jobs. Replit is better if you want an AI agent to build, host and run an app in the browser. Claude Code is better if you want an AI agent working on a codebase you control. Many builders use both together.
Can I use Claude Code with Replit?
Yes. Connect your Replit project to GitHub, run Claude Code on the repository, then push changes back to the branch Replit uses and republish. Replit is also available inside Claude since June 2026.
Is Claude Code free?
No. Claude Code is not included in the free Claude plan. It comes with Claude Pro ($20 a month, or $17 billed annually), Max ($100), Ultra ($200) and Team plans, or you can use it with API billing.
Which is cheaper, Replit or Claude Code?
Both start at $20 a month (Replit Core and Claude Pro). Replit includes hosting and databases, metered as your app grows; with Claude Code you pay for hosting and the database separately.
Do I need to know how to code to use Claude Code?
It helps. Claude Code works on a codebase and runs commands, so you should be comfortable reviewing changes and running the app. Replit, or an app builder like Totalum, suits people who do not want to manage code.
Is there an alternative that combines both?
Yes. Totalum builds hosted Next.js apps with their own SQL database and payments, lets you download the code on every paid plan, and lets Claude Code create and maintain those apps through its MCP server.
