AI App Builders

Base44 vs Lovable in 2026: Pricing, Backend, Code Ownership and Which to Choose

Francesc13 min read

Base44 vs Lovable is the head-to-head most people run when they want an AI app builder with a real backend in 2026. Base44 is Wix's AI app builder: you describe an app and it builds the interface, data, logins and hosting on a managed backend, with no integrations to wire up. Lovable is a chat-first AI app builder that generates React web apps with its own built-in backend, Lovable Cloud, and syncs the code to GitHub. This guide compares them on price, credits, backend, code ownership and fit, using facts read from base44.com and lovable.dev in October 2026.

Base44 vs Lovable 2026 comparison: two AI app builder windows side by side

> Want the app and the code, not just the app? Totalum builds a real Next.js project with its own SQL database, login and hosting, and lets you download the full source on every paid plan. Start building free.

Quick Answer

  • Pick Base44 if you want the fastest path from an idea to a working internal tool or customer portal, you are happy for the app to live on Base44's managed backend, and you like separate credit pools for AI messages and integrations. Paid plans start at $16 a month billed annually.
  • Pick Lovable if you care most about polished front ends, you work in a team (Lovable never charges per seat), and you want two-way GitHub sync with the code. Pro is $25 a month for 100 credits ($21 billed annually).
  • On code ownership, Lovable is more open by default. Lovable syncs any project to GitHub and lets paid users download the codebase. Base44 lists GitHub integration from its Builder plan ($40 a month billed annually).
  • On backend, both are now all-in-one. Base44 ships a managed backend with auth, database and integrations on every plan. Lovable Cloud adds a database, auth, storage, realtime and edge functions, paid from the same credit balance you build with.
  • What changed in late 2026: Base44 launched Base Code on September 28, 2026, a separate product that connects an existing GitHub repository to a shared cloud workspace and ships changes as pull requests.
  • If you want a production web app on a mainstream stack that you can download and host anywhere, Totalum is the third option to test. It is free to start.

What Base44 is in 2026

Base44 describes itself as a no-code AI platform for building full-stack apps, websites and AI agents. You describe what you want, and Base44 builds the design, the data and the functionality, with a managed backend, authentication, integrations and hosting included. It was founded in 2024 by Maor Shlomo and acquired by Wix.

Three things define Base44 today:

  1. No integrations to wire up. The backend, logins and data come built in, which is why Base44 is popular for internal tools, CRMs, dashboards and client portals. You never pick a database or set up auth.
  2. Two kinds of credits. Message credits pay for AI chat with the builder. Integration credits pay for the integration actions your app runs, separately from building. The free plan gives 25 message credits and 100 integration credits a month, across up to 5 apps.
  3. A growing product line. Base44 now sells the app builder, Superagents (AI agents that work across your connected tools), Base44 Backend, and, since September 28, 2026, Base Code.

What Base Code changes

Base Code is a standalone product that connects any GitHub repository to a shared cloud workspace. Teammates describe changes in chat, see them in a live preview, and ship them as pull requests, with a choice of AI models. Workspace admins can restrict imports to approved GitHub organizations, and secrets are stored encrypted and never committed. In Base44's words, it brings the platform "to companies with established production codebases" (GlobeNewswire, September 28, 2026).

For a Base44 vs Lovable decision, Base Code matters only if you already have a codebase. If you are starting from an idea, you are comparing the Base44 app builder with Lovable.

What Lovable is in 2026

Lovable calls itself "an AI software engineer, which enables anyone to build for the web." You chat, Lovable generates a React web app, and you keep iterating in the chat next to a live preview.

  1. One credit balance for everything. Credits pay for building, for hosting your app on Lovable Cloud, and for AI features inside your deployed app. Lovable publishes example costs: "Make the button gray" is 0.50 credits, "Add authentication with sign up and login" is 1.20, and "Build me a landing page, use images" is 1.70. Plan Mode costs a flat 1 credit per message.
  2. A built-in backend. Lovable Cloud gives every project a database, authentication, file storage, realtime and edge functions, with a SQL editor and backup restore.
  3. Team economics. Workspaces have unlimited members on every plan, and Lovable never charges per seat; everyone shares one credit pool, with per-member limits if you need them.

If Replit is also on your list, our Lovable vs Replit comparison covers that matchup.

Base44 vs Lovable pricing: what you actually pay

The sticker prices hide a structural difference: Base44 splits AI chat and app actions into two credit pools, while Lovable runs one balance for building, hosting and in-app AI.

Cost question Base44 Lovable
Cheapest paid plan $16/month billed annually (Starter) $21/month billed annually, $25 monthly (Pro)
Plan that adds GitHub Builder, $40/month billed annually GitHub sync available; codebase download on paid plans
What a heavy build week costs Message credits run down; integration credits are separate Every message spends credits; Plan Mode is 1 credit per message
What a busy live app costs Integration credits for the actions your app runs Hosting and in-app AI draw from the same balance you build with
Adding teammates Not stated on the pricing page Free, unlimited users share one pool
Annual discount 20% 2 months free

For a solo builder making an internal tool, Base44 Starter at $16 a month (annual) is the cheaper entry, and separate integration credits mean a busy app does not eat your building budget.

For a team, Lovable is usually cheaper, because seats are free and everyone shares one balance.

If you need the code in your own GitHub from day one, Lovable gets you there on its entry paid plan, while Base44 asks for Builder.

Backend and data: managed vs Lovable Cloud

Both builders now include a backend, which is the biggest change from the early prompt-to-prototype tools.

Backend feature Base44 Lovable
Database Built in, managed by Base44 Lovable Cloud database with table viewer and SQL editor
Authentication Built in Built in, with user management
File storage Built in Storage buckets
Server logic Backend functions and integrations Edge functions
AI features in your app Paid with integration credits Paid with Lovable credits
Moving the data elsewhere Tied to Base44's backend by default Export data from Cloud advanced settings

The practical difference is lock-in. Base44's managed backend is the reason it feels effortless, and also the reason an app is harder to move later: reviewers note that a Base44 app with a backend is tied to Base44's database by default (All About Cookies, August 2026). Lovable's backend is also hosted by Lovable, but the code is in your GitHub and Lovable lets you export the data, so leaving is a migration rather than a rebuild.

> Building something you will need to own later? Start free on Totalum: your app is a standard Next.js project with its own SQL database, and every paid plan lets you download the full source and connect GitHub on every project.

Code ownership and export

Both companies say you own what you build. Lovable's pricing FAQ says "You own your code," and Base44 states that you own everything you build. The difference is the export path on your plan:

  • Lovable: two-way Git sync with GitHub (also GitLab and Bitbucket), one branch at a time, and a Download codebase button on paid plans.
  • Base44: GitHub integration is listed as a plan feature from Builder ($40 a month billed annually) upward.

Owning the code and being able to run it somewhere else are different things. A generated React front end is portable; a backend that only runs on the vendor's platform is not. Our guide to AI app builders that let you export your code compares what each builder hands you on the way out.

Base44 vs Lovable by use case

Use case Better fit Why
Internal tool or admin dashboard Base44 Managed backend and integrations with nothing to configure
Client or customer portal Base44 Logins, data and hosting built in
Marketing site or landing page Lovable Stronger visual output and design systems
Product with a team of 3 to 10 Lovable Unlimited seats on one credit pool
You need the code in GitHub now Lovable GitHub sync without the Builder tier
Existing codebase, non-engineers contributing Base44 (Base Code) Repo to cloud workspace to pull requests
You want to leave the platform later Neither by default Both backends are hosted by the vendor

If neither column fits, our roundups of the best Base44 alternatives and the best Lovable alternatives cover the wider field.

Where each one falls short

Base44's weak spots

  • The backend is managed by Base44, so moving a live app off the platform is real work.
  • GitHub integration sits on the Builder plan, not the entry plan.
  • Two credit pools are easy to budget once you understand them and confusing until you do.

Lovable's weak spots

  • Every message outside the daily grant costs credits, so heavy iteration gets expensive.
  • Building and hosting share one balance: a traffic spike and a heavy build week compete for the same credits.
  • It builds web apps only.

Why Totalum is worth testing alongside both

Base44 and Lovable both answer "build me an app". Totalum answers a slightly different question: "build me an app I can own and run anywhere, on a stack developers already know."

  • A real Next.js project. Totalum generates Next.js with server-side rendering, so pages are crawlable by search engines and AI assistants.
  • Its own SQL database per project, with an admin panel. You can see and edit every record, restore any minute of the last 30 days, and paid plans back up the live database every night. You can keep a project's data only inside the European Union.
  • Download the full source on every paid plan. Starter ($29 a month) includes editing and downloading your code, connecting GitHub and attaching your own domain, on every project. Viewing the code is free on every plan.
  • API and MCP on every plan, including Free. Connect Claude, ChatGPT or any agent and let it create and maintain full apps through Totalum.
  • One plan covers every project on the account. Free gives you 50 credits to start and 2 projects; Builder ($59) gives 750 credits a month and 50 projects.

Like Base44 and Lovable, Totalum meters usage in credits, so compare what each includes at your volume. If you are only testing free tiers, our free AI app builder comparison puts the limits side by side.
